Chlorine
Chlorine is hazardous and toxic. In its gaseous state it is nonflammable, greenish-yellow, and has a very distinctive odor. If inhaled it is a severe irritant. Chlorine is nonflammable, but can support combustion of certain substances. Chlorine is used in manufacturing chemicals including solvents, pesticides and herbicides, plastics, refrigerants and propellants. It is a main ingredient in bleach, deodorizer and disinfectant. Chlorine is widely used in the pulp and paper industry as well as water and waste-water.
Dry Chlorine Application
Dry or liquid at temperatures between -150°F and +300°F. Typically, steel piping is recommended for handling dry chlorine (no more than 150 PPM of water by weight). Carbon steel is not recommended for service below -20°F. Type 300 stainless steels can be useful at low temperatures but may fail due to chloride stress cracking. Monel and Hastelloy-C are the recommended material for the wetted parts, with reinforced PTFE recommended for the seats, body seal and stem seal (with graphite for firesafe valves).

Valve Design
The ball has a small relief hole on it's upstream side. This insures that the excess pressure in the ball and body cavity of closed valve will relieve in the direction of high pressure. Directional arrows are used to indicate the flow direction. Chlorine valves have blowout proof stems with seals that can be externally adjusted and are available with firesafe construction. RENCOR carries a wide selection of valves suitable to fulfill most applications.
Chlorine valves are specially degreased, cleaned, assembled and packed in a cleanroom to eliminate the possibility of reactive contaminants. Special chlorine-approved lubricants are used for the valve seats and stem seals. Chorine valves are bagged with desiccant packets and poly-bagged, usually with a sticker indicating "Chlorine Service".
Chlorine valves can also include "Fugitive Emission Kits" (a secondary stem packing system to eliminate stem leakage with two monitoring ports to detect possible leaks) and locking devices.
